MILTON - The Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team had a breakout performance from several relays, but no race was tighter than the 200-yard freestyle relay in a dual meet against Milton on Tuesday.
The Cheesemakers had three winning relays in a 98-72 dual meet loss to Milton, including the 200 freestyle relay team edging the Red Hawks by 0.03 seconds. The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of junior Skylar Lassen, freshman Nina Schiro, senior Abby Oudinot and sophomore Maddie Hammer won the race with a time of 1 minute, 48.85 seconds.
Monroe sophomore Grace Keith teamed with Hammer, senior Anna Wolf and Oudinot to win the 200 medley relay (1:59.22) by 0.22 seconds. In the 400 freestyle relay, Keith and Wolf teamed with Schiro and Lassen to win with a time of 3:58.89.
"We knew coming in to tonight it was going to be a tough meet and I was a little worried the girls would back off," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "They kept battling back in their races and proved they can stay competitive in the water with only 14 swimmers."
Wolf added a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly (1:06.44). Keith placed second in the 50 freestyle (27.0) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:57.06. Schiro finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.62).
Lassen placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:13.83) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:07.08). Hammer finished second in the 200 IM (2:26.74) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.76).
