BRODHEAD - Hunter Colden admitted the Brodhead-Juda football team started to get things figured out after a tough loss to Edgerton last week.

Colden and the Cardinals proved it as they pounded Beloit Turner 54-6 Friday night for their first win of the season.

The Cardinals gashed the Trojans for 381 total rushing yards. Colden rushed for 76 yards on eight carries and scored three touchdowns.

"Last week was one of the toughest losses in my career," Colden said. "The first three games we know were disappointing. It feels good to get that win out of the way. We just came out ready to play."

Brodhead-Juda (1-3, 1-1 Rock Valley South) scored touchdowns on their first five drives and finished with touchdowns on eight of their 10 possessions.

Brodhead-Juda coach Jim Matthys said coaches challenged the offensive line after last week.

"We thought coming into the season the offensive line would be our strength," Matthys said. "I don't think they have played at the level they can. Tonight, they did. We are still a work in progress. We have to keep getting better every week."

Brodhead-Juda junior Derek Turner and sophomore Reeve Lincoln each had two touchdowns. The Cardinals capped a seven play, 44-yard drive, with Lincoln's 3-yard TD run in the first quarter. Senior Matt Trotter hit Cole Bauman with a two-point conversion pass to give the Cardinals an 8-0 lead. Lincoln rushed for a team-high 86 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns. Turner rushed for 46 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns.

After the Trojans shanked a -2 yard punt, the Cardinals went to work again late in the first quarter. Colden scored on a 4-yard run to give the Cardinals a 14-0 lead. Facing third-and-8 from the Trojans' 42-yard line, Griffin Day broke loose for a critical 10-yard run. Turner also had a big 13-yard run on third-and-7 to set up a Cardinals score.

The Cardinals' eight-play, 62-yard drive in the second quarter was culminated by Lincoln's 11-yard TD run to give the Cardinals a 21-0 lead with a little more than six minutes left in the second quarter.

Later in the second, Trotter had a 14-yard TD pass to Bauman wiped out due to an illegal man down field. On the next play, Day burst for 16 yards. Turner then scored on a 1-yard TD plunge. Disaster struck the Trojans again. The Cardinals recovered a fumble at the Trojans' 23-yard line and capitalized on the golden field position. Two plays later, Colden made a nifty cut and scored on a 12-yard run to give the Cardinals a 35-0 lead at the half.

"It's probably as good as I have seen Hunter run at half back," Matthys said. "We had some young guys step up and (they) deserved the opportunities."

One of those running backs was Jordan Douglas who gave the Cardinals a spark as a speed option in the backfield.

"He gives us a different dimension," Matthys said. "He has a little bit more lightning."

On defense, the Cardinals were just as impressive, forcing three turnovers and giving up just 88 total yards.

The Cardinals picked up where they left off in the second half. Colden had a 2-yard TD run on the first drive of the third quarter.

Beloit Turner's Nick Bingham then hooked up with Anthony Payton on an 82-yard strike. Brodhead-Juda bounced back with Turner scoring on a 4-yard run and Josiah DeLorme rumbling for a 55-yard TD.

"We knew we took a step forward," Colden said. "Even though we lost last week, I think we figured some things out."
