DARLINGTON - The Darlington-Cuba City girls golf team defeated Lena-Winslow in a nine-hole dual meet Tuesday, and the win came with a piece of history.
Darlington senior Naomi Black shot a 38, tying a school record for the best nine-hole score ever. Black joins three others holding the record: her sisters Natalie Black (2003) and Nellie Black (2010), as well as Allie McCauley (2009).
"She played a super round," Darlington-Cuba City coach Gary Ringen. "It was pretty windy, and she overcame it. Her folks are at all the meets and they knew (of the record), so she knew what she had when she was done, and she was pretty happy."
Aside from Black's record-setting performance, the Redbirds boasted five other golfers breaking 50. Tina Kurschner shot a 48, and senior Nikki Zimmerman, junior Sami Poss and senior Kaitlyn Wall all shot 49s. Junior Shelly Augustin, in her first year of prep golf, also shot a 49 for the JV team. Augustin's and Kurschner's scores were personal bests.
Ringen was impressed by the bevy of strong performances from his team.
"Anytime you have girls shooting in the 40s, it's really an accomplishment," he said. "(Augustin) is really coming along well. She just came out this year. She did a very good job."
As a team, the Redbirds carded a 184, besting Lena-Winslow's 219. Only the four lowest individual scores (Black, Poss, Kurschner and Wall) went on the team card.
With the victory, the Redbirds improved their record to 27-1 on the season.
The team will travel to Mount Horeb for a dual meet Monday at 3 p.m., a meet that was rescheduled from the 24th.
