SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk baseball team's offense broke out in a big way in a 12-7 win over Monticello on Monday.

The Warriors (1-1, 1-0 Six Rivers East) pounded out 14 hits and jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first and four-run third inning.

"I know these guys can hit and they showed it tonight," Black Hawk coach Justin Doyle said. "It's a confidence booster going into Argyle."

The Warriors had six players with multi-hit games, senior Connor Moore leading the way with a 2-for-2 effort. Seniors Mike Walker and Aaron Monson were both 2-for-3. Senior Patrick Mahoney was 2-for-4 and junior Cory Rupnow and junior Logan Stietz were each 2-for-5.

Rupnow went seven innings to get the win on the mound. He gave up seven runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked three. Monticello's Austin Steffen pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up 10 runs on 10 hits.

"I'm very excited he came out and threw strikes," Doyle said of Rupnow. "He doesn't throw too fast and blow it by you. He proved he could pitch the whole length of the game."

Senior Lukas Kolasch went 2-for-3 to lead the Ponies. Senior Derek Gilbertson and sophomore Josh Kolasch were both 2-for-4.

Barneveld 10, Pecatonica 7

BARNEVELD - The Pecatonica baseball team's rally came up short in the seventh inning as the Vikings were able to get the game-tying run to the plate.

Pecatonica (1-2, 0-1 Six Rivers East) entered the seventh trailing 10-3. The Vikings pushed across four runs.

"We battled until the end," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "That is an encouraging sign against a team like Barneveld who is good."

Barneveld's Cody Carmody pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits. He struck out 10, walked three and hit four.

The Vikings battled back from a 3-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the third to tie the game. Junior Jake Scoville had an RBI single and the Vikings scored two runs on errors.

Pecatonica sophomore Tyler Hodgson went 2-for-3 and sophomore Chase Norton was 2-for-4.

Pecatonica senior Matt Goldthorpe pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits. Freshman Drew Schliem came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up two runs on two hits.
