ARGYLE - It's every baseball manager's dream to have an ace pitcher who always wants the ball and has a bulldog mentality.
Argyle pitchers Ben Wallace and Jarret Bauman combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as Argyle (7-4) beat New Glarus 1-0 in 11 innings Friday night in a Home Talent Sunday league game to extend its win streak to six games.
Wallace pitched nine innings and struck out 17. Bauman pitched two shutout innings in relief to get the win.
Argyle's Jon Wild came through with a two-out double in the 11th inning and Tyler Ritschard delivered a game-winning RBI single.
"That team we played tonight was nowhere close to a one-win team," Argyle player-manager Travis Erickson said of New Glarus. "We were hoping to get a guy into scoring position and see what happens. We were talking in the dugout in the 11th that we have a fresh guy who can go nine."
New Glarus pitcher Kyle Spurley lived on the edge throughout the game. He was effectively wild. Spurley pitched 10 2/3 innings and gave up just two hits and one run. He struck out 15 and walked nine.
"You can't say enough about what Spurley did," Erickson said. "He wanted to stay out there. He deserved it (the win) too."
Spurley got off to a rocky start, walking Lee Bohlman and Lance Rossing in the first. He buckled down and struck out two of the next three batters to work his way out of the jam.
The Tourists turned two double plays, including Bryan Ritschard hitting into a twin killing in the fourth on a hit-and-run. Spurley was at his best when he was on the ropes.
Argyle had two on and one out in the sixth, but Spurley picked Rossing off second, then induced Tyler Ritschard to hit a comebacker to him on the mound to dodge the bullet.
Spurley again had to pitch out of a two-on, no-out jam in the seventh after walking Wallace and Bryan Ritschard. He wiggled off the hook by striking out the next three batters to end the threat.
Argyle went 0-for-8 hitting with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base.
The Beavers' defense was just as flawless as New Glarus'. In the fifth, it looked like the Tourists' Cody Austin had dumped a single into right field, but Bohlman came in and fired a bullet to throw Austin out at first. Drew Moen then followed by lining a single to center, which broke up Wallace's no-hit bid. With the Tourists down to their final out in the fifth, Riley Ruegsegger struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike. Moen raced home and appeared set to score, but was thrown out at the plate and Argyle preserved a scoreless game.
"We keep getting in these one-run games," Erickson said. "That can only help us down the road."
