Balanced attack propels Ponies

MONTICELLO - Junior Ben May scored a game-high 15 points to lead a balanced attack to propel Monticello to a 47-39 non-conference win over Highland Monday, Feb. 10.

Monticello (11-6, 6-3 Six Rivers East) just finished a stretch where they played six games in 10 days.

"It's good to end a long week with a win," Monticello coach Mark Olson said. "I felt like we maybe could have played a little bit better. We have been going since Friday. Now we have a chance to recover before our next conference game."

The Ponies jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the first quarter and led by 15 points at the half. Monticello senior Lucas Marty scored 12 points and junior Logan Marty added 10 points. Senior teammate Logan Crooks chipped in eight points.

"I think we play our best when we get a lot of people involved," Olson said. "Hopefully, if one guy is off the other guys pick up the slack."

Monticello won't play again until Thursday, Feb. 13 when they play a key conference game at Black Hawk.

"Hopefully, we understand the intensity Black Hawk is going to bring," Olson said. "Hopefully, we will be prepared to handle it and bring our own level of aggressiveness."



Argyle 72, Madison Abundant Life 60

MADISON - Argyle sophomore Riley Ostby erupted for a game-high 33 points to power the Orioles to a 72-60 non-conference win over Madison Abundant Life on Monday.

It didn't take Argyle (6-11, 2-6 Six Rivers East) long to come back from a 28-24 deficit at the half. The Orioles raced out to a double digit lead by outscoring Abundant Life 48-32 in the second half.

Argyle senior Christopher Severson scored 19 points and sophomore Kyle Emberson added 11 points.



Black Hawk 62, Potosi 45

POTOSI - The Butler brothers combined to score 43 points to lead the Warriors to a 62-45 non-conference win over Potosi Monday.

Potosi outscored the Warriors 19-8 in the first quarter. Black Hawk (14-5, 6-3 Six Rivers East) answered scoring 23 points in the second quarter to take a one-point lead at the half. The Warriors outscored the Chieftains 31-15 in the second half to cruise to the win.

Black Hawk junior Heath Butler scored a game-high 23 points and senior Seth Butler scored 20 points.



McFarland 70, Brodhead 44

BRODHEAD - After winning its first game of 2014 on Saturday, Brodhead couldn't string a streak together dropping a non-conference game to McFarland 70-44.

McFarland (12-7, 10-3 Rock Valley North) raced out to a 40-29 lead at the half. The Spartans broke the game open with a 21-3 run in the third quarter.

Brodhead sophomore Ned Slocum scored a game-high 20 points. Junior teammate Tjaden Sanders added 11 points.

McFarland sophomore Benjamin Rounds scored a team-high 15 points to lead four Spartans in double figures. Junior teammate Sean Chisholm scored 14 while juniors Chuck Moore and Chad Herbst added 11 each. With the loss, Brodhead drops to 3-16, 1-12 Rock Valley South.



Poynette 76,

New Glarus 33

NEW GLARUS - Poynette had a big first quarter surge and New Glarus couldn't recover dropping a non-conference game 76-33 to the Pumas.

Poynette (14-4) raced out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter and the lead snowballed to 26 points at the half.

New Glarus senior Martrell Dixon scored a team-high 10 points to lead the Knights.

Poynette's Tanner Bruchs scored a game-high 25 points.
