EVANSVILLE - Several area football teams were in action Friday night in scrimmages. Monroe and New Glarus-Monticello were two of those teams, going toe-to-toe with each other and Evansville.

"It gets (the players) a little fired up," second-year Monroe head coach Curt Miller said of getting to play against another team.

After two weeks of practice, Miller said his players couldn't wait to get out on the field and hit someone in a colored jersey.

"All week, you could tell these guys wanted to get out and hit somebody else," Miller said.

Monroe opened the scrimmage on offense against Evansville and scored on its first three possessions and four of seven possessions overall.

Senior Drew Geissbuhler scored two of those touchdowns, one on a short run in the first possession and the other on an 18-yard pass from senior quarterback Cory Kundert in the sixth possession.

Junior Dylan Schwitz busted out a 35-yard run in the second possession and rumbled through defenders on several other runs.

In the third possession, junior starting quarterback Michael Barrett hooked up with junior wideout Ethan Schuttler on a 30-yard wheel route for Monroe's other score.

"Everything was clicking, and we expect it to right now," Miller said. "These kids haven't all played a whole lot of varsity football, but they've been in the system and we expect them to go out and make plays."

Each team started its offensive possessions on the defense's 40-yard line.

New Glarus-Monticello scored on its first possession against Monroe's defense, as senior quarterback Ryan Bright took a bootleg to the house from 13 yards out. After that, Monroe's defense clamped down, forcing two turnovers on downs and a fumble.

"It took the defense a little while to get going. We gave up most of those yards on one stupid penalty (pass interference). Yardage-wise we played them pretty tough, but we still have a lot of work to do," Miller said.

All three teams continued playing as the sun set and light rain sprinkled the field. Miller didn't mind. He knew his kids just wanted to play football and prepare for the start of the season.

"These guys have high hopes. Their expectations are much higher than they were last year, and that's a good thing," he said.

Brodhead-Juda also was in action Friday, hosting Elkhorn, Oregon and Beloit Memorial.

Monroe will host DeForest next Friday, Aug. 28, in the season opener. New Glarus-Monticello opens the season at home against Iowa-Grant and Brodhead-Juda also is home, hosting Mayville.
