Avalanche earn first victory

STOUGHTON - Monroe junior Tyler Johnson scored three goals to lift the Avalanche boys hockey co-op to a 5-3 win over Madison La Follette on Thursday.

It marked the first win for the Avalanche (1-12, 0-4 Badger South) this season.

Cade Martin had three assists for Monroe.

"We were finally able to put things together tonight," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "We were shooting the puck well, and we were able to capitalize on the power plays we were given."

Monroe's Colby Smith scored 23 seconds into the game to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. Johnson then scored a go-ahead power-play goal on an assist from Martin at 14:06 in the first period to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead.

Johnson scored a goal on Martin's second assist at 7:36 in the second period to extend the Avalanche's lead to 3-1. Johnson scored later in the second period on Martin's third assist to give the Avalanche a 4-2 lead.

Martin added a power-play goal on an assist from Johnson early in the third period to put the game away.

The Avalanche outshot the Lakers 48-26.

Monroe goaltender Dan Guilliams had 23 saves.

Monroe will host Monona Grove at 2 p.m. Saturday at SLICE.
