John J. Zuber, age 90 passed away peacefully on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the New Glarus Home surrounded by his family.  He was born to John and Louise (Disch) Zuber on May 4, 1933.  John graduated from Belleville High School in 1951.  He then joined the U.S. Army and completed his basic training in Hawaii in 1951.  After basic training he was deployed to the front lines of “Old Baldy” in Korea in January of 1952.  Sgt. First Class John Zuber arrived back in the United States at Fort Sheridan in December, 1952 and was discharged from Fort Knox, KY in September, 1954.  John married Karen Ayen on June 27, 1953.  They moved to the farm in Monticello (currently farmed by their son Jeff (Anita) Zuber) in 1960.  John and Karen moved to “town” in 1980 and John began working as a custodian at the Monticello School.  Up until 2023 John could be seen at the farm helping Jeff, he loved the farm and would drive by most days to make sure all was good.  In later years he enjoyed doing puzzles and watching sports, mostly his beloved Cubs.  A few of his favorite memories were being able to go on the Badger Honor Flight in April of 2015 with his Army Buddy Ronnie Hoffmaster and watching the Cubs win the World Series in 2016 with his wife Karen.  He also liked his trips to “the Boat” and gambling casinos and getaways with good friends Art and Rose Silver.  John was very active in a variety of community organizations. 

John is survived by his children Randall (Madeline) Zuber, Jeff (Anita) Zuber, and Mary (Dan) Stenbroten; his sister Dorothy (Arlen) Milestone, Darlene Cormier, Janice Atzen, eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen, and brother Don.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ-Monticello, 416 E. Lake Ave., Monticello, WI with Mary Gafner officiating.  Military Honors will be accorded.

A gathering of relatives and friends will precede the memorial service from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ-Monticello.

The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is assisting the family.

The family wants to express our deep gratitude to all who have helped care for John, especially the William S. Middleton VA Memorial Hospital in Madison, who treated him with so much kindness and much respect.

A memorial fund has been established.
