MONROE — One of the areas oldest golf courses is closed until further notice after a fire destroyed a maintenance shed late Wednesday.
Fire departments responded to Windy Acres golf course just after 11 p.m. on April 10 when flames were seen in the shed. By the time crews got there to try and put out the fire on the large shed — approximately 65-feet by 120-feet — it was too late.
“Juda Fire Department was outstanding, but it was already out of control,” said Jim Krieger, Windy Acres owner, in a voicemail statement on the club’s phone line. “Windy Acres is closed until further notice. We don’t have any equipment left; no carts … I will have updates, but it doesn’t look good.”
Krieger said the fire started sometime after sunset when an employee “got done” with the shed. By 11 p.m., Krieger could see flames and called it in.
“The clubhouse survived and no one was hurt,” Krieger said.
Windy Acres is a 9-hole public course that opened in 1952. The Krieger family purchased the course in 1961.
Juda Fire held command on the scene. According to Juda Fire Chief Steve Isely, the building and all of its contents inside are a complete loss. The total value has not been determined. Crews were on scene for about four hours. There were no injuries. An investigation was going to take place on Thursday to determine the cause of the fire. Isely said Thursday morning before the investigation that there was nothing initially suspicious about the fire.
Monroe Rural and Brodhead Fire also responded with aid to the scene. Green County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control.
