Man, 23, ejected, dies in SUV crash near Belmont
Accident

DARLINGTON — A 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle accident discovered just north of Belmont midday Wednesday, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Brandon Joseph Zart, Platteville, was believed to be the sole occupant of the crashed 2001 Chevrolet Blazer.

The sheriff’s office was notified of the accident at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday but “an exact time of the crash has not yet been determined,” Sheriff Reg Gill wrote in a release.

An investigation revealed the Blazer was westbound on County G near the intersection with Mitchell Hollow Road when it went off the south side of the road and down a steep embankment. It hit a tree and some large rocks, then overturned and hit two more trees before coming to a rest.

Zart was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office.

Belmont Police, Fire and EMS assisted deputies at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

This is the second motor vehicle fatality of 2018 on Lafayette County roadways, according to Gill.
