MONROE - Superheroes and cows: It's an unlikely combination that has descended upon the Square in downtown Monroe, courtesy of Main Street Monroe.

Main Street Executive Director Jordan Nordby said the organization adored their Asquarium theme last year but believes this year's theme, SuperCows on the Square, will appeal to a broader audience.

"This is the sixth year we're doing a theme," Nordby said. "We loved Asquarium last year, but it wasn't quite as universal. We really felt cows tied into the community of agriculture and superheroes appeal to everyone."

There are 16 SuperCows; four are set up facing businesses along every side of the Square. Each piece is a wood carving created by Zoli's Woodcarving. The designs were drawn by local artist Alaina Schindler. Standing over 6 feet tall, heroes like Supergirl and Iron Man guard the Square. Main Street Monroe also developed its garden spaces with the theme, hanging action signs like ones featured in comic book dialogue.

The carvings will stay in place throughout the summer. Regional businesses have agreed to sponsor them. The businesses can take the carving once the SuperCows on the Square season is over, but some may be donated back to Main Street, Nordby said.

The main event to celebrate the SuperCows is set for Saturday. The kickoff will be along the Square from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be centered around families. Nordby said that in keeping with the theme, they will recognize local heroes from business owners who make a difference to police to EMTs. Attendees will be able to take part in pony rides, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club. They can get their faces painted and take part in other activities. There will also be a tractor procession.
