MONROE - A new walk-in clinic is coming to Monroe this fall, which will make going to the doctor as easy as going shopping.

Monroe Clinic, in partnership with Shopko, will be opening Green County's first FastCare clinic.

FastCare accepts walk-ins, not appointments, for patients over 18 months old. The emphasis is on short waiting periods.

Ken Berndt, director of business development at Bellin Health, said the clinic could open Oct. 27. Monroe Clinic officials said the clinic may open by mid-November.

The concept of locating clinics in Shopko started about two years ago in Green Bay.

Bellin Health, an integrated health care delivery system based in Green Bay, joined Shopko, also based in Green Bay, in an effort to open new retail health clinics in two Green Bay area Shopko stores, the first of their kind.

Shopko provides the physical space, and Bellin works with local providers in the communities to provide the health care services.

FastCare clinics can now be found in 15 Shopko stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Seven more stores are due to be opened by Nov. 1, Berndt said.

Monroe Clinic will continue to offer walk-in care at the emergency department, including some services not available at the FastCare clinic.

"Many people wake up each morning challenged with a daily balancing act that includes an overflowing schedule. FastCare can help busy families quickly and easily take care of their minor health needs," Dr. Mark Thompson, Monroe Clinic's chief medical officer, said.

Located in Shopko, the walk-in clinic will be one more choice for patients needing convenient access to quality health care.

Among the many types of conditions that can be treated at the clinic are sore throats, ear aches, sinus congestion, flu symptoms, urinary tract infections and basic laboratory services.

Berndt said lab tests include strep, pregnancy, macro urinalysis and mononucleosis.

The clinic, staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants from Monroe Clinic, is an extension of the patient's relationship with a primary care physician. Services will be provided according to the guidelines for retail clinics as defined by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatricians and the American Medical Association.

Patients can request visits and lab results be integrated with Monroe Clinic's medical charts, for follow-ups with their PCPs.

The best part is little or no waiting, Brendt said. A visit to the FastCare clinic will normally take 10-15 minutes to see a member of the staff, and another 10 minutes to pick up a prescription, which can be electronically submitted to the Shopko pharmacy or another pharmacy of choice.

The cost for a FastCare visit, including the provider's exam and any lab tests, will be $49 at the time of the visit. But patients can have their insurance or Medicare or Medicaid billed for reimbursement.
