MONROE — As part of SSM Health Monroe Hospital’s Mission & Heritage Week, the call for nominations was made to employees to highlight individuals across the organization to recognize those who have gone above and beyond to serve others at work or in our communities. On Nov. 16, SSM Health announced this year’s Mission in Motion Award Winner is Hugo Espinoza, Language Services Coordinator in Monroe.

Espinoza was nominated for this award by Dana Sayles, Medical Assistant in Pediatrics, who spoke to Hugo’s dedication to providing translation services for patients and his passion for patient advocacy.

“Having Hugo come in, especially with our newborn patients has been so amazing,” Sayles said. “He is always happy, smiling and willing to help when he can. I know that because of Hugo we can help our Spanish speaking patients in the area. He helps close some of the barriers healthcare has with these patients.

“He never seems annoyed with me when I ask him questions or need him to come down to the department to help me with a situation. He’s had to stay late to help translate with some patients. I know he has made a positive impact. We are giving them a little personal touch which can mean the world if you don’t understand what is going on. I want you to know how much we appreciate all you do for us and our patients.”
