MONROE - A proposed car wash coming to Monroe's westside got preliminary approval Wednesday from the city's plan commission.
Tracy Weigel, Darlington, who is planning the dual bay, automatic, touchless car wash facility at 112 West 8th St., said Monroe is the right-sized community with the right demographics for the project that is "not cheap" to build.
"Monroe is growing, from the outside looking in, and the timing is right for us," he added.
Weigel has been working with the city's economic development director, Pam Christopher, for several months, finding the right location and going through many preliminary considerations needed for the project, including zoning requirements and utility access.
Weigel presented a preliminary site concept plan to the Plan Commission, which showed the car wash situated east of the Swiss Alps restaurant and north of Alpine Slicing, which located in the former Pick N Save building.
Alpine Slicing is ready to sell about three-fourths of its parking lot for the project, according to Weigel.
Christopher said Weigel has also met with Al Gerber, the city's engineering supervisor, and George Thompson, the water and wastewater utilities director, to verify feasibility of the project.
Weigel has car washes in Darlington, Mineral Point and Platteville, according to Christopher.
Gerber said Alpine Slicing would still have about 32 parking spaces in front of its facility, as well as an employee parking lot in the rear.
Weigel is to meet again with the Plan Commission when a certified survey map is ready. No starting date for construction has been set.
