Virginia J. Dischler, age 82, died peacefully December 9, 2009, at Harbor House Alzheimer's Care facility in Monroe, Wisconsin. She was born June 29, 1927 in Gratiot township, Wisconsin, the daughter of Palmer and Elsie (Siedschlag) Wahler. She graduated from South Wayne High School in 1945 and Platteville State Teachers College in 1949. She taught at Brodhead Elementary School until the spring of 1952. On July 30, 1952, she married Lucas H. Dischler at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gratiot, Wisconsin. They owned and operated the Wiota Tavern for the next 3 years.
Virginia was stricken with polio in October, 1956. While caring for her 3 young children, she was named Green County March of Dimes Mother of the Year in 1959. Once the family settled in Monroe, she was homebound but her teaching talent was not forgotten. Her creativity and love for young children extended to many as she provided a daycare service in her home for several years. She was Aunt Sis to everyone.
Thanks in part to encouragement from her sister, Betty, she was employed as a unit secretary at St. Clare Hospital, retiring in November, 1993 after 20 years of service. She loved all the people she met and worked with and her years at the hospital were very rewarding.
Virginia and her sisters were very close and she always looked forward to her yearly trip to South Dakota with them to visit Mary. One of her favorite pastimes was playing solitaire. She could lighten everyone's day by her singing, yodeling and especially her whistling. Virginia was a member of St. Victor Parish.
Survivors include her four daughters: Cathy (Larry) Wehinger of Monroe, Linda (Bill) Pinnow of Monroe, Sally (Greg) Damsgard of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Karen Dischler of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren: Marci (Jacob) Boss of Monroe, Brandon Pinnow of Orangeville, Illinois, and Lucas, Evan, and Russell Damsgard; three sisters, Dorothy (Charles) Miller of Browntown, Wisconsin, Betty (Royal) Karlen of Monroe, and Mary (Kermit) Quanbeck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucas; her parents; a brother, Kenneth at birth; one grandchild, Jillian Damsgard at birth; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and David Brinkmeier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Victor Catholic Church, in Monroe. The Celebrant will be Fr. Michael E. Klarer, with burial in the Union Cemetery in South Wayne. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, 1455 Mansion Dr. and 18th Ave., Monroe.
Donations in memory of "Ma" will be forwarded to several charitable organizations. The family acknowledges the compassionate care received from the caregivers of Harbor House and Monroe Hospice. We are especially grateful for the care and devotion given to "Sis" from Aunt Betty.
