Nada Kundert Thorp Raymond, age 87 of Monroe died on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Monroe Manor Nursing Home. She was born on June 25, 1922 in Monroe the daughter of Thomas E. and Zelma (Kundert) Thorp. Nada was a 1940 graduate of Monroe High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Carthage College. Throughout the years she was an elementary school teacher, teaching in Clarno, North Chicago, Illinois and in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1943 Nada joined the U.S. Navy as a Wave, being discharged in 1945 as a Storekeeper 3rd Class. Her travels throughout the world were a very important part of her life, which she reflected upon frequently. Through her travels she met her future husband, Jack D. Raymond, who was a career Navy man. They were married on December 7, 1945 in Hutchinson, Kansas. As a result, she lived in many places including Japan, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Colorado and Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W Auxiliary, the National Education Association and the Fleet Reserve. Nada was most talented in all aspects of craft work, ceramic dolls, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, flower arranging, fabric painting and gardening.
Surviving are her children; Ronda (Conrad) Best of Kankakee, IL, Jack T. (Maureen) Raymond, of White Bear Lake, MN, Thomas V. (Kathie) Raymond, of Hastings, MN. grandchildren; Nora Best, Rheanna Raymond, Katherine Raymond, Conrad R. Best, Marie Raymond, Brittiany Raymond and a brother, Thomas K. Thorp of Milton. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Jack, granddaughter, Genvieve Best and brother, Frank K. Thorp.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 1:00 P.M. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Gretchen Sylvester, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. at the time of service at the funeral home.
