NEW GLARUS, WI - Lawrence "Corkie" Meland passed away December 11, 2009 at the New Glarus Home. Corkie was born July 31, 1927 in Primrose Township, son of Lawrence and Anna (Mitmoen) Meland. He attended Plain View country school and New Glarus High School. Corkie proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On July 21, 1956 he was united in marriage to Naomi Itten. During his working life, he was employed by Pet Milk Company, Disch Hardware and retired from Federal Industries. He was a member of the Stuessy Kuenzi American Legion Post and served as past Commander. He was a member of Swiss United Church of Christ. Corkie loved deer hunting with his brothers and their trips to the North woods which he did for 50 years. Summer family vacations to northern Wisconsin were enjoyed every year. Naomi and he took vacations to Branson, MO, Hawaii and many other places in the United States. Corkie will be missed by his morning coffee buddies and his bowling friends. He took great pride in his motorcycles, cars and enjoyed the time he spent shining them up. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.

He is survived by his wife Naomi; two daughters Madeline (Randall J.) Zuber of Monticello and Marilyn Tucker of Belleville; four grandchildren R. Scott Zuber; Jessica (Marc) Etter; Tyler and Mia Tucker; two great grandchildren Ruthie Rae Zuber and Claudia Rae Etter; siblings Gladys Glinka; Arlene (Don) Sytsma; Shirley (Rolland) Disch; Willard (Valeria); sister in law Marge (Vernon) Meland as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Clifford; Ernest; Kenneth; Amos; Lloyd; Lester (WWII); Vernon; Gerald; Mildred Griffin and son in law Louis Tucker.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. at the Swiss United Church of Christ, New Glarus on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. The Pastor Petra Streiff officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery, New Glarus, with full military honors.

Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Zentner - Beal Funeral Home 29 6th Ave. New Glarus.

A memorial fund has been established in his memory.
