Gerry (Geraldine Garrison) Weir, 98, died Tuesday morning October 3, 2017 peacefully with family present at the Renaissance Assisted Living in Stanardsville, Va. She was born in Northhome Minnesota, the daughter of Jedidiah and Christine Garrison of St Paul MN. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Dr. James R. Weir.
She met her future husband at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. Most of her life was spent in Monroe, Wis. where Dr. Weir was a senior partner in the Monroe Clinic. Busy with raising her family, her husband's serious health problems led her into teaching junior high school and high school classes in Social Sciences and English. She loved the challenges of teaching diverse materials from the Greek Classics to Robert's Rules of Order. She earned a Master's degree in English and Education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Wis.; she was inducted into the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Education Society.
As Dr. Weir's health worsened, she learned hemodialysis and assisted him in home hemodialysis for his remaining eight years. After his death she moved to Tucker, GA to be near her daughter Christine and her family; then moving to Stanardsville, VA to live with her youngest daughter Carolyn (a nurse) when she required more skilled care. For the last two years she has resided at the Renaissance Assisted Living facility in Stanardsville, VA. She was a member of the Ladies Joy Class at Springhill Baptist Church in Ruckersville, VA.
Church activities were always a vital part of her life. Whether playing (pump) organ and piano for street church services as a high schooler in St. Paul, MN, teaching Sunday School, making meals for the homeless or delivering Meals-on-Wheels, she expressed her faith in word and actions.
She is survived by six children: James R. Weir, Colfax, WI, Donald G.Weir, Hilo HI, Glen O. Weir, Beaumont TX, Timothy J. Weir, Daingerfield TX, Christine W. Cramer Tucker GA and Carolyn W. Eddins Stanardsville VA.; as well as eight grandchildren, Kristi W. Welle ,WI, Sheryl W. Costello ,CO, Michael Weir, TX, James Weir, TX, Joseph Weir, TX, Alison Weir ,WI, Matthew Cramer, GA, and Philip Cramer, TN.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Renaissance Assisted Living staff for their tender care, the Hospice of the Piedmont and to her friends for prayers and visits.
There will be a memorial service at the Spring Hill Baptist Church at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017 followed by visitation until 7 p.m. A graveside interment service in Monroe, Wis. will be held at a later date.
