MONROE - The suspect in a shooting that left one dead and another seriously injured was fatally shot by police Wednesday evening.
At 7:15 p.m., police were called to a mobile home at 720 17th St. for a report of two people being shot. Responding officers found one male they believed was dead, which was later confirmed. A second man was seriously wounded and taken to Monroe Clinic, according to Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley.
The shooter fled on foot and Monroe officers, assisted by Green County deputies, began a search. At 7:36 p.m., police received a call of a man with a handgun who was seen near 1007 12th St., about eight blocks from the first shooting scene. He matched the description of the suspect and was described as "covered in blood."
Kelley said officers confronted the homicide suspect and told him to drop his weapon. Instead, the suspect pointed the gun at officers. Deputies fired multiple shots, and the man was hit. Officers gave first aid and summoned an ambulance. He was transported to Monroe Clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
Kelley said the initial investigation shows the three men were acquainted and the shooting stemmed from an argument.
No officers and no one else was injured in the two incidents.
The chief did not know the exact number of officers, both city and sheriff's, who responded to the two separate locations, but said it was "a lot."
Because an officer was involved in the second shooting, the Department of Justice was called in to investigate. Officials were on the scene by about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Kelley said there is no further danger to the public.
