Paula Beckman, owner and general manager of Monroe Furniture with her husband, Jerry, talks about her best friend, Sophie, a 1-year-old golden doodle. Beckman had a cocker spaniel five years ago, but after it died her and her husband decided they didn't want any more dogs for the time being. Beckman then battled kidney cancer about three years ago, and her mother and brother died around the same time over a year ago, leaving Beckman feeling depressed. Jerry surprised her with Sophie for Mother's Day last year after getting her from a breeder in Caledonia.

Describe Sophie's personality.
She loves other dogs and our two cats. She's just joyous. Whenever kids come to the store, she lights up. She's also a little mischievous. There's times I almost think she's human. She's the first dog I've had that really snuggles.
What do you and Sophie like to do
together?
Mostly we chill. She goes with me almost everywhere I go. She goes with me if I go to get fast food for lunch or to visit family. She goes with me to work pretty much seven days a week. She's grown up here. I also think it helps the employees' morale to have her here. If they're having a bad day, she'll put her head on their lap when they're in the break room. We also have some customers that come in just to see her.
What has it been like having Sophie in your life?
It's really helped fill a void. She's a great companion. She loves to snuggle, not so wonderful on taking walks, but she has been very uplifting. She helped me with my depression a lot.
