Lafayette County debuts new K-9
DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office recently received a bullet and stab-resistant protective vest for K-9 Deputy Cody as part of the Wisconsin VEST-A-DOG program.
K-9 Deputy Cody's vest was made possible by Dr. William G. Hicks, DVM, who donated the full amount of the vest, which costs $840, to the VEST-A-DOG program.
Hicks, a Lafayette County native, founded the Janesville Veterinary Clinic in 1973, which has since expanded to become the Animal Hospital Pet Clinic of Janesville.
The VEST-A-DOG program was started in 2005 by Donna Morgan of Janesville. Since its inception, the program has vested more than 100 dogs.
Orangeville
Applications for grants are available
ORANGEVILLE - The trustees of the Harry R. and Gertrude Zweifel Trust announce that applications for post-high school educational grants are now available for the 2011-12 school year.
Applicants must have resided in the Orangeville Community Unit District 203 and graduated after April 1, 2008, unless they served in the military within the four years immediately following their graduation.
Home-schooled graduates must have completed all requirements of graduation.
Zweifel Trust grants may be used for approved study at technical and vocational schools, as well as study at colleges and universities.
Applications may be downloaded from the Zweifel Trust website at www.zweifeltrust.org. Applications will also be available at the Orangeville High School counseling office until June 1.
The application deadline is August 1, 2011.

Clint Black concert tickets available
MONROE - The Behring Senior Center, Monroe, is offering a trip to see country singer Clint Black Saturday, June 18, at the Crystal Grand Music Theatre in Wisconsin Dells. The trip is open to the public. The cost is $78 for the ticket and bus ride to the show. The trip will depart at 3:30 p.m. from the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St., and will return at midnight. Local author book signing May 18
WARREN - Local author Kim Sigafus will be having a book signing at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Warren Library. Sigafus, along with writing partner, Lyle Ernst, will be on hand to discuss their book, "The Life and Times of the Ojibwa People." The book is a blend of Ojibwa history, oral traditions, lifestyles and historic recipes. The duo will be bringing along several items for the audience to see and handle.
Sigafus is an Ojibwa, whose family is from White Earth Indian Reservation in Minnesota. Sigafus has a journalism background; she served as editor of the North Iowa Times in McGregor, Iowa, and has done freelance writing for several newspapers in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois.
Ernst currently freelances for the Moline Dispatch, Rock Island Argus, and The Review in Erie, Ill. He also has contributed essays for three books edited by Robert Wolf: "An American Mosaic," "Heartland Portrait," and "River Days, Stories from the Mississippi."
Their book will be available for purchase after the program.
The cost is $10, and includes a handmade Talking Feather, which are for use at tribal council. For more information, call the Warren Library at (815) 745-2076.
