Lincoln believed in us
Letter To The Editor

From Diana Vance

To the Editor:

Men like President Abraham Lincoln, a true courageous man, a humble man and a believer in Almighty God and a man who knew how to lead and tell the people what he stood for I truly admire and respect with all my heart.

If President Lincoln stood for democracy he did it not to be popular but he believed it was the best government our country could have. WHY? Because it was “for the people, of the people and by the people.”

President Lincoln believed in us. He believed we cared as much about this country as he did. No person loved America as much as Abraham Lincoln did. He knew it from the ground up.

He walked the trails in  the woods where he also loved to bring stories to the people there so they could live there another year or two. He knew what boredom could do to the mind.

He just knew people because his life had been close to them. He heard their fears, their needs, their concern for their sons and daughters. He also spent time with the wealthy. You remember those guys who always ran for office and Lincoln often lost except for the presidency. The people knew the best candidate, many personally.

He knew the people would be the best judge of those who ran for office. When it came to important things like that, the people made their way to the towns and cities to read many papers. Yes they taught themselves to read because who would be their leader better be excellent because they were informed, well informed.

Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a powerful speech with two important messages for those listening. “Those who gave their lives on this battle ground “SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN”. He was talking about those who defended the North and their “FULL MEASURE OF DEVOTION” to their country, all of it.

And then he said to those waiting to vote, “that this nation, under God, shall have a NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM…and the GOVERNMENT of the PEOPLE, by the PEOPLE, for the PEOPLE shall NOT PERISH from the earth.” He could not be clearer. He pointed out the best thing about democracy-it is WE the PEOPLE who decide what happens in our government. Good God! Please love that freedom! AND Vote for Joe Biden, a Democrat.
