To the Editor:
The right to vote is the foundation of any democracy. It is up to us, the citizens of this country, to make sure that our voices are heard. That’s why on Saturday, October 17th, there is a National Day of Action called ‘VOTE EARLY’!
“No right is more precious in a free country than that of having a voice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, we must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined.” – Justice Hugo Black
Voting early is the best way to make sure that your vote is counted! You may have heard recent stories about the attempts to influence the November 3rd midterm election, including removing registered voters from voter rolls, the United States Postal Service (USPS) not delivering absentee ballots in time to be counted, and the possibility of intimidation of voters at the polls. For example, during the recent primary election in the State of Washington, 20,000 votes went uncounted because they were delivered late by USPS.
A sure way to make sure your vote is counted is to vote early. You can vote early in Wisconsin Tuesday, October 20 through Friday, October 30. Hours for early voting are determined individually by each municipal clerk. If you need information about where and when early voting is happening for your municipality, you can find out more at the ‘My Vote Wisconsin’ website at: https://myvote.wi.gov/en-us/
The website has information about your polling place, how to contact your clerk, requesting an absentee ballot, a sample ballot, and much more. If you do not have a computer or Wi-Fi at home, visit your local public library in Wisconsin, which provide free access to public computers and high-speed Wi-Fi.
If you vote absentee, consider the ‘Absentee In Person’ option by visiting your municipal clerk and filling out the ballot while there. Or if you receive an absentee ballot from USPS, make sure to return it directly to your municipal clerk, or if your municipality has one, drop it in the ballot drop box. Do not use USPS mail.
Let your voice be heard! Exercise your right to vote by voting early & making sure it is counted!
