Marsha Stanek and Marci Hensel left the Green County Humane Society's Board of directors this month. They have been true champions of the homeless pets at the shelter for the past eight years.
Both of them got involved when the shelter became a no-kill facility in 1999. Marsha started by helping the shelter animals finding homes at PetsMart and Marci and her family by walking dogs at night. For the past eight years, Marsha has spent every Saturday at PetsMart in Madison, setting up the cat cages, adopting out animals and staying late to do the cleaning up. If nobody could drive the animals from Monroe, she would come down from Madison to pick them up. Whenever she could, she would spend time at the shelter walking, bathing and grooming dogs.
For several years she has been responsible for the sponsorship program, a financially successful program, all thank-you notes, paying thousands of dollars in postage, and all the updating of animals for Petfinder. She wrote grants and organized fund raisers. She nominated the former president, Shawn Grass, in the nationwide competition "Persons Who Make a Difference" He didn't win first prize, but was in the very top and received $2300 for the shelter.
Although Marsha no longer will serve on the board, she has graciously offered to continue doing her computer work, but her direct involvement with the shelter will cease. She will, however, continue to work for other animal welfare organizations, such as the Ferret Nook and the Iowa County Humane Society.
Marsha resigned over the new board's controversial outdoor policy. She will be missed by all who knew her at GCHS.
Marci has volunteered hundreds of hours at the shelter. Every Friday night she would walk dogs, pick out the cats and dogs that were to go to PetsMart the following day and then come back on Saturday morning and drive them to Madison. She checked on homes to make sure dogs and cats were well taken care of once they were adopted. She volunteered in the reception calling on applications and matching dogs and cats to new owners. She knew every cat and dog at the shelter and cared and loved every single one. She took dogs to a volunteer groomer or she groomed them herself so they would look good to would-be adopters. She helped socialize cats and kittens and made sure they were healthy.
She served on the board for several years and chaired several committees. She wrote grants and helped organize many fund raisers.
She will continue to work for animal organizations such as the Ferret Nook, Country Animal Haven, and Iowa County Humane Society.
Marci has resigned in protest against the new outdoor policy that she feels is detrimental to the well-being of the animals.
