Monroe edges Juda, tops Orfordville

MONROE - Monroe Optimists No. 1 won a pair of games in the Monroe Area Fastpicth league on Sunday. In the first game, Monroe edged Juda 1-0.

Monroe scored the game's only run in the third inning when Samantha Solberg led off with a walk, advanced to third on a base hit by Elicia Frie and scored on a groundout by Katie Holmes.

Solberg went the distance on the mound allowing only three hits and striking out four in picking up the win. Amber Ramos struck out 11 in four innings of work for Juda.

In the second game, Monroe (7-1) scored eight runs over the first three innings and then held on to defeat Orfordville 8-5. Chandra McGuire, Kayla Updike, Kirstin Vetterli and Holmes each had multiple hits for Monroe. Vetterli's two hits went for extra bases and she drove in four runs for Monroe.

In other Red League games, Argyle (4-4) defeated Orangeville 16-7, Monticello (4-4) defeated Brodhead 5-1 and Juda and Orfordville played to a 3-3 tie.

In White League play, Monroe Optimists No. 2 (5-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and defeated Juda No. 2 7-2. Corey Wells picked up the win for Monroe. With the loss, Juda No. 2 drops to 7-1.
