Warriors race at Ripon College Showcase
Black Hawk was one of 29 teams at the Rip College Showcase March 26. Most of the schools in attendance were from the eastern portion of the state and D1 or D2 schools.
“Roshholt was the next smallest and they have about 200 in their high school,” said Black Hawk coach Eric Erickson. “Most of the schools in our ‘Small School’ division were D2 high schools with enrollments in the 500-600 range. The way the meet was run, we competed against all schools and they sorted out the small school/ large school results.”
On the girls side, Raylin Peterson was third in the shot put at 30 feet, 4.5 inches, while teammate Jaliyah Collins was fourth at 30-1.
“This was the first high school meet for Raylin and the first meet of the season for Jaliyah. I was happy to see both of them start the season over 30’ and be in a place where some technical improvements will help them take some bigger leaps,” Erickson said.
In the 60-meter hurdles perliminaries, Veronica Cheatham was ninth at 12.20 seconds, just missing the finals.
Jenna Meier, Maddy Lange, Cheatham and Peterson raced to seventh in the 800-meter relay (2:05.57).
“The girls had a nice race and with excellent teams. To place and score was an accomplishment,” Erickson said.
Lange was 11th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.44 seconds.
“Maddy is going to learn to run this longer sprint and be a force to be reckoned with in the future,” Erickson said.
Overall, Black Hawk’s girls team scored 13 points and finished in 12th place.
On the boys side, the Warriors scored five points and finished 12th.
In the 200, Jovanny Erickson (25.18) was eight, followed directly by teammate Elijah Shelton (25.21).
“Jo and EJ are the base of a strong group of sprinters this year. They are learning more and more what it takes to be high-end track athletes. Warming up and being prepared are vital components and they are starting to comprehend that,” coach Erickson said.
In the 800-relay, Erickson and Shelton teamed up with Lucas Milz and Andrew Figi to place fifth (1:42.35).
“A strong performance and an event that should be a highlight for us at the end of the year,” the coach said.
Lane Marty was 10th in the 60-meter high hurdles (11.16).
“This was Lane’s first ever high hurdle race so to finish as high as he did was amazing, He also came back and placed 15th in the 400 so it was a good double for him. That will transition over to the 300 intermediate hurdles outdoors,” Erickson said.
