MONROE — Four teenagers face criminal charges in Green County Circuit Court related to a shed break-in and “joyride” with a Brodhead High School utility terrain vehicle this summer.
All are 19 years old and live in Brodhead.
Jared Gregory Miller is charged with a felony count of burglary and misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and taking and driving a vehicle without consent.
The other three, Jeremiah Lee Darwin, Jonathon Scott Elsner and Theodore J. Policastro, face misdemeanor charges of illegal entry into a building and taking and driving a vehicle without consent. Darwin also faces one misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property.
The school’s baseball coach discovered the John Deere TX Gator missing when he went to use it July 27, according to the criminal complaints. The latch on the shed had been pried open.
Security camera footage showed people breaking into the shed and driving off in the UTV shortly after 3 a.m. July 26. A few empty beer cans were found nearby.
Police identified a pickup truck seen in the footage as belonging to Elsner. Elsner later told an officer it was done as a prank and he “did not feel like it was a big deal at the time.” Elsner also said they planned to return the UTV but “forgot about it until it was too late.”
Three of the defendants — Darwin, Elsner and Policastro — went to the high school principal’s home to confess their involvement.
Miller later told police he didn’t go to the principal’s house because he had to work that day. Miller described the incident as a “joyride.”
The UTV was found abandoned on a residential property in Brodhead belonging to one of their grandparents.
