MONROE - Monroe Clinic is encouraging parents of 12-month-old children to have their infants receive the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunization vaccine.
"With the recent outbreak of measles just two hours away, we're taking extraordinary steps to protect our patients. Some of the most vulnerable in this outbreak are babies not yet vaccinated with the MMR vaccine," the Clinic said in a news release Friday.
Five infants at a Palantine, Ill. daycare have been diagosed with the infectious disease, and more cases are expected, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday. At least 145 measles cases have been confirmed in 14 states since more than three dozen people fell ill after being exposed to Disneyland in December.
The earliest a child can get the MMR shot is at 12 months of age.
Monroe Clinic's Pediatric Team will be calling the parents of children 12 months and older who are not yet vaccinated to get them in for the MMR shot as soon as possible.
