MONROE - The rainy weather that started Halloween belied the festivities that occurred the evening of Oct. 31. Main Street Monroe held its annual Trunk or Treat event immediately following its Halloween parade. Approximately 1,200 people attendees went through Trunk or Treat. Twenty-one cars signed up to take part in Trunk or Treat, including JoAnne Leuenberger of JoAnne's Dress Shop. Boomerang Bakery, also located in downtown Monroe, supplied cookies for Mitek's trunk. Julie's Bridal, Monroe Heating and Sheet Metal, and Xtreme Upholstery each sponsored a car. Remaining cars were supplied by area residents.

Parade participants included Big Radio, Culver's Junior Optimists and the Monroe Fire Department. The Junior Optimists and fire department also participated in Trunk or Treat.

"We had a phenomenal turnout this year. It was really great to have so many parade participants and a great crowd of onlookers for the parade and then have so many of them stay for Trunk or Treat," said Jordan Nordby, Main Street's executive director. At one point there was a line to get in to the south side of the Courthouse where Trunk or Treat was occurring.

Popular costumes included Iron Man, Captain America, minions and characters from Star Wars.

"It's always fun to see all of the different characters and how creative people are for Halloween. There were so many young families and lots of young children that the energy level was really high," Nordby said. "Having an event like this makes it more festive because it brings out so many people. Rather than running into a few families in the neighborhood, you get to see all sorts of different people. And it's in a safe setting."

Trunk decorating was left up to each group that registered. One included an eyeball game, while others included carved pumpkins, face painting and life-sized decorations.
