BRODHEAD — The Brodhead Cardinals snapped the Monroe Cheesemakers’ six game winning streak with a 5-3 win in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game on Tuesday, April 28. The win was the eighth straight at home for Brodhead.

The Cardinals scored three times in the first inning on a fielder’s choice groundout and a two-run single by Karli Krumwiede. The Cardinals increased their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a base hit by Keegan Steinke that scored Kennedy Zimmerman.

The Cheesemakers got on the board as Fiona Junk scored on Maddi Ruegsegger’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it 4-1.

Hayden Elmer gave the Cardinals a four-run cushion as she scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cheesemakers had a rally going in the seventh inning as Junk scored on a single by Jayde Hawkinson and Amaira Collins scored on a passed ball, but pitcher Mady Henning retired Ruegsegger, Kaegann Paulson, and Paizley Kundert in order to close out the game.

Zimmerman had a double and a run scored to lead the Cardinals. Junk and Paulson each had a double for Monroe.

Henning pitched all seven innings allowing 10 hits for the Cardinals. She walked one and struck out six. Paulson allowed five runs, four earned, with two walks and six strikeouts for the Cheesemakers.

Brodhead coach Chad Risum was pleased to see him team win over their RVC rival.

“It was a satisfying win. The girls did well. They put the ball in play and kept the pressure on. We’ve been working on striking early and the girls were set today and gave us some breathing room,” said Risum.

Brodhead (7-2, 5-2 RVC-Rock) will travel to Delavan-Darien on Monday, May 4 for an RVC-Rock game.

Monroe (12-3, 4-1 RVC-Valley) was set for back-to-back Rock Valley Conference crossover games, traveling to Turner on April 30 and hosting Big Foot on May 1.
