The Monroe Cheesemakers tennis team advanced 9 of 10 players to the WIAA Division 2 East Troy Sectional thanks to a stellar day on the courts May 26 at the Portage Regional.

PORTAGE — The Monroe boys tennis team competed at the Division 2 subsectional at Portage on Tuesday, May 26 and came away with nearly its entire varsity lineup advancing to the sectionals on Thursday, May 28 at East Troy.

All told, Monroe has sectional qualifiers at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 singles and at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 doubles.

“We came away with nine guys advancing to the sectionals which is the most I’ve ever had make it through in my career,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said.

As a team, the Cheesemakers tied Edgewood for first place with 22 points going into the sectional.

At No. 1 singles, Alex Gerrits won a super tiebreaker to improve to 13-12 and advance to the sectional. At No. 2 singles, Allen Gerrits won a super tiebreaker to go to the sectional with a 19-8 record. Cash McCabe won his first match at No. 3 singles, but lost to number one seed Patrick Feagan of Edgewood, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Sam Roidt continued his hot streak to go to 14-1 on the season.

At No. 1 doubles, Carsen Bartholf and Hamilton Stites improved to 17-5 with their win to reach the sectional. The No. 2 doubles team of Travis Saunders and Graysan Bartholf beat a tough doubles team from Madison Country Day to go to 25-2. Michael Henning and Eli Salzwedel, at No. 3 doubles, defeated doubles teams from Viroqua and Madison Country Day to go to 10-2 on the season and advance to sectionals.

As for some of the players for the Cheesemakers, Bordner noted the 17-9 season by Cash McCabe.

“He was a true anchor in our singles lineup this season. We can’t wait for his senior year next year,” he said.

Bordner also praised the play of Sam Roidt at No. 4 singles.

“Sam has come on super strong and will have a shot to really make some noise on Thursday.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Travis Saunders and Graysan Bartholf also impressed Bordner.

“They continue to be really dominant and one of the best D2 doubles teams in the state right now,” said Bordner.
