MONROE — Ivie Ellenson drove in three runs and Kaegan Paulson struck out 11 batters to lead the Monroe Cheesemakers to a 7-1 win over the Sauk Prairie Eagles in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Paulson also hit an RBI triple and scored two runs to help the Cheesemakers advance to the regional semifinal on May 28 against Portage.
The score was tied at 1-1 when the Cheesemakers scored four runs in the fifth inning and pulled away with two runs in the sixth inning. Maddie Ruegsegger and Jayde Hawkinson scored on a single by Ellenson that gave the Cheesemakers a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning. After that, Paulson allowed just two baserunners.
Monroe coach Joe O’Leksy noted the clutch pitching Paulson provided in key situations.
“With runners on base and with two outs, she really hunkered down and got ahead in the count and worked our strikeout pitches and she ended up with 11 strikeouts and that’s great. Eleven strikeouts and one walk. I’ll take that any day,” said O’Leksy.
Monroe improved to 18-9 with the win and hosted Portage in the regional final on Thursday, May 28.
Jefferson 6, Brodhead 4
The Brodhead Cardinals got a 3-1 lead over the Jefferson Eagles in the third inning, but the fourth seeded Eagles were able to overtake the fifth seeded Cardinals by scoring four runs in the fifth inning to get a 6-4 win in a Division 2 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Second baseman Keegan Steinke went 2x3 with a double and an RBI while 3B Leah Rear was 2x4 with an RBI.
Brodhead ends the season 15-6-1.
Monticello-New Glarus 6, Cambridge 3
Molly Olson got two hits and drove in two runs and scored a run while Eliza Legris scored two runs in a 6-3 win for the No. 3 seeded Ponies over the No. 6 seeded Cambridge Blue Jays in a Division 3 regional final on Tuesday, May 26.
Heidi Olson struck out seven while going the distance in the pitching circle for MNG. The Ponies (18-5) traveled to No. 2 seed Lodi for the Division 3 regional championship on Thursday, May 28.
Juda-Albany 12, Palmyra-Eagle 0
Emerson Briggs hit a triple and drove in three runs and Ryleigh Brown threw a two-hit shutout to lead No. 1 seeded Jubany to a 12-0 win in five innings over No. 9 seeded Palmyra-Eagle in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Emersen Butts and Lexi Eastwood each scored two runs as Jubany put the game away by scoring 10 runs in the second inning.
Juda-Albany (16-8-1) hosted No. 4 seed Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in the regional championship on Thursday, May 28.
Deerfield 6, Darlington 0
The No. 6 seeded Darlington Redbirds were shut out on four hits by the No. 3 seeded Deerfield Demons 6-0 in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Deerfield got single runs in the first and third innings and two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Sydney Wiegel got two of the Redbirds four hits including a double while Lilly Ritchie and Alivia Crosby got the other hits for Darlington.
The Redbirds closed the season 4-15.
Cuba City 16, Belleville 8
The Cuba City Cubans (No. 4 seed) scored seven runs in the third inning to power their way past the Belleville Wildcats (No. 5 seed) 16-8 in a Division 4 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
The Wildcats trailed 11-3 and tried to rally with two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to get within 11-8, but the Cubans put up five more runs in the sixth to pull away for the win. Brynn Prochaska was 2x4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Wildcats.
The Wildcats end their season with a record of 6-16.
Argyle-Black Hawk 4, Wauzeka-Steuben 1
Kylie Butler hit a two-run homer in the first inning to spark the No. 6 seed Argyle-Black Hawk Warriors to a 4-1 upset win over the No. 3 seed Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets in a Division 5 regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 26.
Butler’s blast was part of a three-run first inning and Brynn Harris held the Hornets to one unearned run and three hits over seven innings to pace the Orioles.
Argyle-Black Hawk (14-13) traveled to No. 2 seed Belmont for the regional championship on Thursday, May 28.
