MONROE — Artists, art lovers and those just looking for a touch of local creativity can rejoice at Monroe Art Market, which opened May 1.

The 13th Avenue shop is bringing life back into what used to be a feed shop, and owner Lauren Burkey is excited to be a part of that.

“We’re breathing new life into an old part of town,” she said. “Instead of letting it continue disintegrate, we’re trying to make something new out of it.”

At the Art Market, customers can purchase their own art supplies and also find art from others in and around the community.

Patrons can see and purchase art from a variety of Wisconsin artists, each with a unique skillset and creative product.

“I love seeing what people are doing,” Burkey said. “If you’re willing to put yourself out there and put your art on display, then I’m willing to host it.”

On the shelves, customers can find everything from handmade jewelry and steampunk sculptures to unique, hand-painted eggs, colorful prints and everything in between.

Beyond just shopping, Burkey is hoping to also offer outdoor workshops and classes throughout the summer.

Burkey moved to Monroe six years ago from Colorado and her love and appreciation of her new home has kept her determined to showcase local artists at her shop.

“We’re not from here, but we feel like we are,” Burkey said. “In this community, people have a lot of pride for their area. I know a lot of artists in the community and I wanted to support them by giving them a place to showcase their artwork.”

The market is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a grand opening event June 5 at the shop, located at 1311 13 Avenue in Monroe.
