MONROE — One in four older adults has a fall each year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Wisconsin leads the nation in fall-related deaths for people age 60 and older. But the good news, according to the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Green County, is that falls are not a normal part of aging and can be prevented. The Stepping On program, offered in Monroe by the ADRC has been researched and proven to reduce falls by 31%. The next class will take place virtually, via Zoom, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, June 15 through July 27.

In just seven weekly, 2-hour sessions, Stepping On gives participant’s strategies for avoiding falls including balance and strength exercises, home safety check suggestions, medication review, and more. Guest experts including a physical therapist, pharmacist, and others visit over the course of the seven sessions providing falls prevention information and strategies for avoiding a fall. The workshop is designed specifically for people who are age 60 or older and have fallen and/or have a fear of falling. Participants can expect to leave with more strength, better balance, and a feeling of confidence and independence.

Everyone has different levels and understandings of technology and they understand the frustration associated with this. They will work with participants on being able to take and participate in this program. They will be offering a Zoom Practice Session from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8. Private scheduled times are also available. To register for Stepping On, contact the ADRC of Green County at 608-328-9499. The class is free. Pre-registration is necessary and spots are limited.
