Blossoms & Barbs: Oct. 31, 2009

A blossom just doesn't come close to representing the thanks I have for those who helped to make the second Green Haven Scavenger Hunt and Fall Festival> a fun (albeit, chilly) day. When I began as executive director a little over two years ago, I was overwhelmed by the commitment given to the organization from the board, staff and volunteers. An event like this requires many volunteers, and we were blessed with a terrific group of helpers. From keeping a fire in the shelter fireplace to the Monroe FFA and Monroe Noon Optimists for keeping us fed, to the "Hint Masters" and "Holstein Heads" to those filling and lighting the hundreds of luminaria, everyone approached the day with enthusiasm and creativity - reminding me again of the tremendous value of the community support for Green Haven. Maybe a greenhouse full of blooms comes close! We were freezin' for a reason. Also, we have to send an apology to the older gentleman enjoying a day in his yard on Cold Springs Road last Saturday. In looking for a specific barn quilt, a few Expedition teams asked him if he was "Grandpa's Delight." I imagine he was as puzzled by this as we were amused to hear about it. Special thanks again to our corporate sponsors: Swiss Colony, Studio 906 and Big Radio. As we move forward in working with those affected by domestic violence and abuse, it is wonderful to know the community stands with us and supports us in our goal of creating peaceful homes and lives in Green County. - Alice Franks-Gray, executive director, Green Haven Family Advocates, Inc.>

Blossoms to Tom Chopp> from Monroe Clinic Hospital for inviting all the Green County pastors, ministers and priests to a free luncheon at the hospital. Tom, you picked out a great speaker, too.

A huge truckload of barbs to the Monroe pastors and ministers> who did not come. - MR & JW>

A barb to the City of Monroe>. Do we all remember the city telling us that the parking meters situation on the Square was a money loser? We were told that the cost for repairing parts and labor for the enforcement was not making the city any money. Then how can we be in the hole for $80,000 if it never made money, but lost it? You can't have it both ways. We are paying attention. - Anonymous>

A big blossom and thank you to the National Honor Society girls>. What a wonderful surprise to look out my window and see the girls raking my lawn, plus all the neighbors' up and down 1st Street. You made my day, and I'm sure many others'. Thanks so much. - Eileen Wagner, Monroe>

This barb is to the local business> that has parked its trailer for two weeks at a 90-degree corner of 5th Street and 11th Avenue. This construction trailer blocks half of the corner and has caused many near accidents. Also a barb to the person who parks his city truck on the other side of this corner. The biggest barbs go to the mayor, police department and alderman who have done nothing about this situation after numerous complaints. - Ernie and Nancy Beutel>
