ARGYLE - The last time the Pecatonica-Argyle wrestling team won a dual match, junior Ross Gilbertson was on the junior varsity team.
The Vikings behind Gilbertson at 215 pounds and a dominating performance from several freshmen wrestlers powered the way to a 51-19 dual meet win over Black Hawk Tuesday night. It was the Vikings first dual meet win since 2007.
"It's the first dual meet I have won on the varsity," Gilbertson said, who defeated Black Hawk senior Tyler Quinn, 9-6. "I wasn't on the varsity as a freshman. It shows how hard we have been working."
Gilbertson credited the extra conditioning and sound technique in wrestling on the ground as factors in allowing him to outlast Quinn.
"Without that, I would have been rolled over in the first period," he said. "I got some escapes and reversals."
Pecatonica-Argyle (1-0) rolled to 30-6 lead early on after four pins in the first five matches wrestled. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Ricky Rolfsmeyer (130) pinned Black Hawk sophomore Zach Sigafus in 5 minutes, 2 seconds after trailing 4-0 entering the third period.
"We have 21 kids that have the will to never quit or back down," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Ike Campbell said. "That showed up in several matches."
Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Jeremiah Tollakson (135) pinned Black Hawk's Joe Leu in 3:50. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Tyler Francois (140) stormed back from a deficit and pinned Black Hawk freshman Kory Costa in 5:10. Junior Eli Davis (145) improved to 6-4 this year after pinning Black Hawk senior Ben Stauffacher in 3:48.
"We put ourselves in bad positions," Black Hawk coach Jim Seffrood said. "We beat ourselves. A lot of our guys were leading and ended up getting beat. That's why you wrestle six minutes."
The Warriors (0-2) did get pins from seniors Isaac Sigafus (119) and Grant Roper (160). Black Hawk junior Bryant Luhman (171) defeated Dakota Bevins, 12-4.
In one of the most action-packed matches of the night, Pecatonica-Argyle freshman Jake Scoville (152) pulled off a reversal with 25 seconds to go in the third period to take a 10-9 lead over Black Hawk senior Kyle Stauffacher. Stauffacher returned the favor and came through with a reversal with 16 seconds left to cap a thrilling 11-10 win.
The Vikings also received pins from junior Ian Sigg (189) and heavyweight David Cuevas. Sigg pinned Black Hawk's Patrick Mahoney in 46 seconds.
"I felt like we were ready for this meet," Sigg said. "We were hyped up and ready to dominate. Our coach has been trying to put in our mind to use more technique and conditioning."
Cuevas also made short work of the Warriors' Andy Stauffacher pinning him in 1:00.
"You have to be able to wrestle six minutes or you won't have a chance," Campbell said. "It's progress. We are getting there. It's a work in progress."
