ARGYLE - Tuesday night's conference matchup between the Black Hawk Warriors and Argyle Orioles came down to the final seconds of regulation, in which the visiting Warriors escaped with a 42-41 victory.
For Mike Flanagan and his Black Hawk team, bouts against Argyle have proved to be as close as games can come.
"This is the second time we have played them (Argyle), and they gave us another closely fought battle tonight," Flanagan said. "It's scary to think that we might face this team come playoff time. You have to give credit to their players and coach. They came ready to play tonight."
The host Orioles were looking to make a statement against a tough opponent in Black Hawk, as they came out of the gates early with a 26-21 lead entering halftime.
But the Warriors were able to step up the defensive pressure in the second half, as they capitalized off of untimely turnovers committed by the Orioles.
"We made some poor decisions in the passing game at the end," said Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard. "But overall, I am very proud with the way our team played tonight. We played a heck of a game, (as) we were tough defensively in our halfcourt set, and the girls did everything that we asked of them. Black Hawk is a well-coached and hardworking team. But we have to learn from tonight, move on, and prepare for Monticello on Friday."
Jen Wellnitz scored a game-high 22 points for Black Hawk, while fellow senior Michelle Flanagan added 11 points.
Junior Hannah Saalsaa and Jenna Langmeier scored 12 and 11 points for Argyle, respectively.
