MONROE — Monroe Theatre Guild (MTG) will present the fun and sassy musical fable Guys & Dolls as their next production on the Colony Brands Stage. Ashley McKinney, who previously directed The Descendents for MTG in 2024, returns to the director chair with assistant director Sami McCoy and musical director Kendra Johnson.
The classic comedy, based on a story and characters by Damon Runyon, with book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and lyrics by Frank Loesser, is set in the glittering world of Broadway’s Golden Age where slick gamblers, big-dreaming dames, and unforgettable tunes collide. Full of well-recognized songs such as “A Bushel and a Peck” and “Luck Be a Lady,” this crowd-pleasing classic shows that when romance enters the game, even the toughest odds don’t stand a chance.
Set in Times Square, the story centers around gambler Nathan Detroit, played by seasoned MTG actor Ben Holland, who is trying to set up the biggest craps game in New York City. On the run from the authorities and short on cash, Detroit taps fellow gambler Sky Masterson, played by Josiah Randecker, to put up the cash.
Meanwhile, Detroit’s girlfriend and fiancée of 14 years, the nightclub performer Miss Adelaide, played by Kaya Teasdale, doesn’t approve of his gambling and won’t stop pestering him to get married. At the same time, Sergeant Sarah Brown, played by Irelyn Olson, is delivering street corner sermons with her Mission Band in an attempt to encourage the local gamblers (i.e., “sinners”) to repent and save themselves by visiting the Save-a-Soul Mission. Shenanigans ensue as the gamblers take us from New York City to Havana and back again.
Joined by fellow gamblers Nicely-Nicely Johnson, played by Carl Messer; Benny Southwest, played by Jesse Rowley; Big Jule, played by Jerry Bredeson and Ben Johnson; and a bunch of other rapscallions, the “Guys” learn that they just might have a weakness when it comes to “Dolls”.
Guys & Dolls is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. Go to www.mtishows.com for more information.
