MONROE - With the return of junior Hannah Vetterli, the Monroe volleyball team found a spark early on before Stoughton pulled out a win in the first set en route to sweeping the Cheesemakers Thursday.
Stoughton beat Monroe 27-25, 25-7, 25-17.
"That is the potential I knew they had in that first game," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "I think going into the second set we would have come out with even more fire."
Vetterli had a team-high five kills and six digs after returning from a family emergency. Sophomore Alicia Kuester had four kills and senior Kari Jordan added six digs.
"We stopped communicating and passing in the second game," Witt said. "We let too much of it get into our heads and get the best of us. A lot was going our way."
Monroe (1-8, 0-2 Badger South) trailed 21-11 in the third set before battling back.
Monroe junior Paige Murphy had nine assists and senior Maggy Johnson and sophomore Chloe Schroeder each had one block. Murphy and senior Lauren Curtis each had one ace.
"In that third game we got down, I took a timeout and we came back," Witt said. "We have to find a way to get that spark sooner."
