MADISON - The last time Monroe's No. 3 doubles team played Verona, senior Nick Hendrickson and sophomore Patrick Gellings pulled off a three-set match victory.

In a rematch of that budding rivalry, Verona's David Hackbarth and Nick Boomgarden defeated the Cheesemakers' No. 3 doubles team of Hendrickson and Gellings in a championship match of the Badger Conference tennis tournament, 7-5, 6-1, Friday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

"Today they were a little more focused and more on," Hendrickson said. "When you have big hitters like that it's tough. It's hard to stop those guys when they get on a roll."

Gellings was confident in the abilities and rapport developed between doubles partners.

"I knew there would be a lot of good teams," Gellings said. "I thought we would be up there with them."

Monroe coach Jim Bartholf knows Hendrickson and Gellings were drained.

"We got a little tired," Bartholf said. "Our serves kind of petered out. We couldn't keep enough balls in play. I'm really pleased with their second place finish."

Hendrickson and Gellings earned a title shot by defeating Madison Edgewood's Scott Wilson and Tim Morgan in a semifinal match, 6-4, 6-2.

"If we were near the net we were going for the point," Bartholf said. "They (Edgewood) spray the ball all over the place. They are not patient players. We were going to let them spray the ball around and they did."

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Matt Turek and Levi Janssens took fourth, losing a third place match to Stoughton's Sam Hemlich and Taylor Shaffer in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0.

"There wasn't anything to really play for," Bartholf said. "They didn't have the intensity. There was no bearing on it. Stoughton was excited. They wanted to win more than we did and it showed."

Turek and Janssens played for third after dropping a semifinal match to the eventual champion tandem of Phil Paradise and Dirk VanRybroek of Madison Edgewood, 6-2, 6-2. Paradise and VanRybroek improved to 20-0.

"That's the best Division 2 doubles teams in the state," Bartholf said.
