DEFOREST - Just three days after giving up 67 points in a non-conference loss to Dubuque Senior, the Monroe Cheese-makers put together a defensive effort that teams in the Badger Conference, North and South, haven't had much success against throughout the season.

The Cheesemakers used a fast start and stingy defense to roll past the Deforest Norskies, 43-30 in a Badger Conference crossover game Tuesday night.

Monroe jumped out to a 6-0 lead while the Norskies missed three layups.

The Cheesemakers' defense hedged on ball screens and prevented the Norskies' top player, Ben Coorough from getting open looks. Coorough finished with just three points.

Monroe, meanwhile, took a 19-11 halftime lead and opened it to 30-17 after three quarters.

Junior Michael Barrett led all scorers with 19 points and senior Kevin Frint chipped in with nine points for Monroe.

The Cheesemakers improved to 14-5 overall (8-2 Badger South) and will get back into conference action Friday at home against Fort Atkinson. It will be Senior Night and Fan Appreciation Night at the Monroe High School gym.
