BOSCOBEL - The Darlington boys cross country team remains in contention to repeat as WIAA Division 3 state champions.
The Darlington boys placed four runners in the top 11 to win the Division 3 Boscobel sectional 35-44 over the Bulldogs on Saturday to punch its ticket to state for the fifth straight year. Boscobel, the sectional runner-up, also is state bound after finishing as the sectional runner-up.
"I think we are two of the best teams in the state," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said. "I knew it would be close."
The Darlington girls ran away with the sectional championship 35-94 over Poynette and the Redbird girls will make their sixth consecutive trip to state.
"As a coach to see the level that both of them are winning the sectional and going to state, it makes me proud," Miehe said. "The kids have put in the miles where they can get to this level where they can win the sectional."
Darlington junior Tyson Miehe won the 5K with a time of 16 minutes, 32 seconds. Senior Quinn Cullen finished third (17:05) and senior Garth Garrison took sixth (17:18). Sophomore Thomas Schultz took 10th (17:34) and senior Kyle Schulte was 15th (18:02).
The other area boys state qualifier was Albany sophomore Aaron Johnson, who took 12th (17:50). The Comets as a team finished third and just missed qualifying as a team behind Boscobel. Fellow sophomore Brennan Bloedel finished 14th (17:57). Albany freshman Josh Little took 23rd (18:22) and freshman Tyler Dahl was 28th (18:37). Senior Kyle Woyak finished 31st (18:47) to round out the top five for the Comets.
Pecatonica-Argyle took 18th out of 19 schools. The Vikings were led by senior Marcus Rubio who finished 84th (21:00) and senior Skylar Cragg who took 91st (22:03).
In the girls race, Darlington senior Christa Wamsley finished second (15:54) and senior Harley Douglas was third (16:26). The Redbirds had their top five runners in the top 11. Junior Claire Cullen took ninth (16:56) followed by senior Cheyenne Wolfe, 10th (16:56) and Tatum Evenstad, 11th (17:06).
The other area state qualifier was Albany junior Bailey Hlavachek who finished sixth (16:42).
Pecatonica-Argyle finished 12th out of 16 teams. The Vikings were led by freshman Samantha Erickson who took 17th (17:42) and senior Emma Marion who was 59th (19:40).
