SPRING GREEN - Darlington junior Jaden Komprood finished second place and the Redbirds had three runners in the top seven to win the River Valley Invitational small school championship Saturday at the Spring Green Golf Course.
Boscobel junior Dakota Kauffman won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 10.63 seconds just ahead of Komprood who took second (16:22.33). Darlington sophomore Conner Hackett finished sixth (17:12.19) and senior Thomas Schultz was seventh (17:19.12).
"The guys had a strong team race with Jaden Komprood and Conner Hackett running their best times ever," Darlington coach Arnie Miehe said.
Darlington junior Sean Baebee took 15th (17:48.38) and junior Blake Cwynar was 20th (18:03.34).
"We are running well as a team, but we still need to close our 1-5 gap," Miehe said.
Albany's one-two punch of seniors Aaron Johnson and Brennan Bloedel helped the Comets finish second as a team (77 points), which was 29 points behind the champion Redbirds. Johnson finished fourth (17:02.01) and Bloedel was fifth (17:09.79). Albany junior Tyler Dahl took 12th (17:42.5). Albany sophomores Connor Trow and Isaac Halverson rounded out the top five for the Comets finishing 30th and 31st, respectively. Trow finished in 18:43.11 and Halverson finished in 18:44.69.
New Glarus-Monticello sophomore Kyle Fredrickson took 14th (17:45.91) and senior teammate John Zuber was 18th (17:52.39) to lead the Knights to a fifth-place finish.
New Glarus-Monticello senior Dylan Beckwith took 28th (18:40.1) and sophomore Christian Arnett was 33rd (18:47.49). Junior Max Cruse took 50th (19:32.01) to round out the top five for the Knights.
The Darlington girls cross country team took third place in the small schools race due to a tiebreaker. Boscobel (76) won the team title. Both Darlington and Wisconsin Heights finished tied with 100 points. The Redbirds finished third place due to a sixth runner tiebreaker.
"Erin Wolf and Emma Crist came through with strong races and our ladies are starting to run with more confidence," Miehe said.
Albany freshman Emma Guenther finished third (20:26.46) and New Glarus-Monticello senior Bri Roska took sixth (20:46.20). Albany junior Sydnee Woyak took 11th (21:24.44).
The top runner for the Redbirds was senior Johanna Meister, who took 12th (21:29.89). Darlington sophomore Paige Schilling took 15th (21:49.74). Darlington freshmen Erin Wolf and Emma Crist finished 18th and 19th, respectively. Wolf finished in 21:59.86 and Crist finished in 22:01.66. Junior Jaci Moseley took 40th (23:17.18).
New Glarus-Monticello finished fifth as a team (125), Albany took seventh (181) and Pecatonica-Argyle (280) was 11th out of 12 teams.
New Glarus-Monticello junior Ashley Risley took 20th (22:06.59) and sophomore teammate Kelly Fredrickson was 28th (22:41.51). Senior teammate Lilly Blum finished 30th (22:46.11) and sophomore Jenna Molencamp was 50th (23:56.51).
The other top runners for Albany included sophomore Lauren Blumer who took 25th (22:34.22), freshman Madeline Halverson, 72nd, (25:08.95); and junior Kylee Blumer, 89th (26:08.06).
Pecatonica had three of the top 56 runners out of a field of 102. Pecatonica-Argyle junior Samantha Erickson finished 46th (23:31.27) to lead the Vikings. Junior teammate Hannah James took 55th (24:11.71) and sophomore Josie Penniston was 56th (24:11.96).
