MILTON - The Monroe girls basketball team was on the verge of extending their winning streak to three games against Milton Saturday, Feb. 8.
The Red Hawks went on a 16-0 run to take a 30-16 lead and never looked back. Monroe (5-11, 2-6 Badger South) ran into some struggles in the second quarter where the Red Hawks outscored the Cheesemakers 22-9 to take a 13 point lead at the half.
Milton's Sydney Harms scored a game-high 21 points and Bryanna Bucholtz scored a season-high 17 points.
"That was the difference in the game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "They (Milton) shot the ball very well. We did a nice job of passing the ball and moving in the first quarter. We went through about nine possessions in the second quarter where we weren't able to convert."
Monroe sophomore Brooke Adams and senior Taylor Barrett each scored a team-high 12 points. Senior Kirsten Vetterli added eight points. The Red Hawks shot 22 of 28 from the free throw line compared to 16 of 28 for the Cheesemakers.
With the win, the Red Hawks avenged an earlier season loss to the Cheesemakers.
Monroe enters a key stretch with three home games this week, including conference games against rivals Stoughton and Oregon, which are both in the same five-team regional grouping as the Cheesemakers. Monroe hosts Clinton tonight and then hosts Stoughton Wednesday, Feb. 12. The Cheesemakers host Oregon Friday, Feb. 14.
"Depending on how we do head-to-head, this could have an impact on how the seeding goes," Mathiason said. "It (Clinton) will be a great challenge for us. It will be a big week for us. We will try to take it one game at a time."
