Baseball (5-13): >After surviving a 6-5 thriller at home against fifth-seeded Big Foot Friday, No. 4 Monroe lost a 2-1 battle at top-seeded Edgerton Tuesday in the WIAA Divison 2 regional semifinals.

Softball (19-2): >After winning the battle for Highway 11 with Brodhead, 3-1, Thursday night in a WIAA Division 2 softball regional final, Monroe hopes to play two today in the Whitewater sectional. The Cheesemakers first challenge Jefferson at 11 a.m.

Track and Field: >The Cheesemakers' boys and girls qualified in five events for the WIAA state track meet with their performances at last Thursday's sectional in Boscobel.

Soccer (7-8-1): >The top-seeded Sugar River Raiders prevented Monroe from winning its second playoff game in the program's history with a 3-1 WIAA Division 2 regional final win Saturday in Belleville. The Lady Cheesemakers got on the postseason board with a 2-0 blanking of Evansville last Thursday on the road.

Tennis: >The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles pairing of seniors Matt Turek and Levi Janssens have had a week to visualize their progress in the WIAA state tennis tournament at Neilsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, which begins today.

Golf: >Monroe and its ace Gary Petit wrapped up the golf season with a sixth-place team finish Wednesday at the WIAA Division 2 Mayville sectional.

AREA BASEBALL>

Springing the first "W": >Darlington routed Shullsburg, 16-6, in five innings Friday afternoon to claim the Redbirds' first playoff win since starting up a spring program.

No. 2 justified the No. 2 seed:> Enjoying a rare No. 2 seed and a first-round bye didn't throw off Juda's second starter, Beau Benner. The hard-throwing junior gave the Panthers a shot at the regional finals with a two-hit shutout of Albany, 2-0, Tuesday evening.

Boldly trotting on: >Monticello slugged its way past Six Rivers East rival Argyle, 8-2, last Thursday, to advance to the Ponies' first sectonal round in the program's eight-year history.
