Pecatonica, Black Hawk win conference openers

Pecatonica senior hitter Brittany Kent proved to be the difference in the Vikings' Six Rivers Conference volleyball opener against Albany Tuesday night.

The Vikings (5-0, 1-0 Six Rivers) defeated the Comets (1-2, 0-1) 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23.

Kent led the Vikings with 13 kills.

"She was on fire tonight," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said.

Pecatonica senior Morgan Pien and sophomore Ellie Gifford each had 10 assists.

Sophomore Courtney Pfeuti had 14 assists and senior Rachel Reuf 11 for Albany.

For Albany, Devan Brugger, Sydney Bump and Hillary Best each had five kills.

Monticello 3, Argyle 0>

Monticello swept Argyle 25-13, 25-19 and 28-26.

Junior Lindsay Flanagan led Argyle with 13 digs.

MG 3, Monroe 0>

The Cheesemakers opened Badger South Conference play Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at Monona Grove.

The Silver Eagles won 25-15, 25-16 and 25-17.

Jamie Armstrong led Monroe with 15 kills. Emily Rufenacht added six digs and Kayla Streff registered seven assists and a service ace.

The Cheesemakers host Fort Atkinson on Thursday.

Black Hawk 3, Barneveld 0>

Black Hawk opened Six Rivers Conference play on Tuesday with a 3-0 win at Barneveld.

The Warriors captured a close game one, 25-21, and won games two and three 25-22 and 25-18.

Kim Wellnitz notched 12 kills and Gabi Lehner registered 13 assists.

The Black Hawk volleyball team opened the season with a 3-2 finish at the University of Wisconsin Platteville on Saturday.

Black Hawk senior Paige Butler led the Warriors with 30 kills. Lehner had 31 assists.

The Warriors defeated Highland, 25-19, 25-21. The Warriors then lost to Dodgeville 20-25, 16-25. Black Hawk posted wins over Cuba City junior varsity and Belmont before losing a semifinal match to Southwestern 27-25, 15-25, 3-15.
