FORT ATKINSON - Making the trip to take on conference foe Fort Atkinson on Tuesday night, the lady Cheesemakers found themselves trailing early in the game in what appeared to be a low scoring match.
After managing only two points in the second quarter, Monroe entered halftime down 15-9. Cue the comeback.
The Cheesemakers were able to tie the game at the end of the third quarter, and by that time, Monroe and coach Sam Mathiason were determined to finish the job.
Down by five early in the fourth quarter, the Cheesemakers went on an 11-0 run to take the lead and control of the game. After getting fouled and sent to the free throw line, Monroe was able to seal the deal and cap off their come-from-behind victory, 37-31.
"We kept pushing to the end," Mathiason said. "We had lots of people contribute tonight in lots of ways. This was a nice team effort."
Senior Kirsten Vetterli had a strong game for the Cheesemakers, scoring a game-high 17 points. Junior Alacia Keegan provided solid play off the bench, adding seven points.
Monroe travels to Reedsburg on Friday, Feb. 21.
