MADISON - Monroe girls cross country coach Brian Jefferson shook up his lineup to give some new runners a chance to compete on varsity at the Madison Invite on Thursday.
Jefferson rested his top seven runners since they will be competing in the Luther College All-American cross country race in Decorah, Iowa. The Cheesemakers finished 14 out of 15 teams. Madison West won its third straight invitational title.
"A lot of the girls who were running varsity for the first time fought their nerves more than the course and that clearly hurt their ability to race. Once that gun goes off nerves need to be thrown to the curb and you have to compete, Jefferson said.
Monroe freshman Molly Wyss finished 62nd with a time of 18 minutes, 17 seconds to lead the Cheesemakers. Monroe senior Stephanie Wyss took 72nd (18:42) and Chelsea Haffele was 82nd (19:11).
Mollie Bazley finished 89th (20:05) and Krissy Hartwig was 20th (20:06). Kortney Pippenger took 92nd with a time of 20:13.
