FORT ATKINSON - A slow start put the Monroe volleyball team in a hole it couldn't get out of Thursday against Fort Atkinson.

The Cheesemakers lost in straight sets, 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 to drop to a record of 6-17, 0-5 Badger South.

Monroe coach Heidi Witt said the scoreboard didn't necessarily reflect how the game went.

"As seems to be our (way), the scores sound worse than the games were played," Witt said. "We started out slowly, couldn't pass very well, couldn't make things happen, but once we got into the second set, we played point for point with them right up until the end."

Hannah Vetterli and Alicia Kuester led the Cheesemakers with three kills each. Maggy Johnson recorded one block, Lauren Curtis had five aces and five digs, and Paige Murphy and Hannah Neuenschwander each recorded three assists.

Witt said the team struggled with serves receive early on, but things started to click for the team as the game progressed.

"We played very scrappy tonight," she said. "We've always been very persistent after the ball, so that's good. We just have to start a little quicker."

Monroe will host Oregon at 7 p.m. Thursday.
